Happy Friday! In addition to being Friday, we can all look forward to having lunch or dinner at the Avon Puerto Vallarta Restaurant in support of our 8th grade class on Sunday. I can't wait!

Thank you to everyone who made last week's St. Mary School Mass on Sunday such a great success! Many of you rearranged your schedules to be available and it was much appreciated. The children were on their very best behavior and sang like angels at the end of Mass. The reception was a big hit and we all enjoyed it.

We would like to do this again in the Spring so stay tuned for a date.

It has been another busy week. We started with our Student Council speeches and election of officers on Monday and just kept on going. I have to say that the student body took this election in an appropriately serious manner from the speeches through to the voting. The younger students listened to the speeches with rapt attention. The nominees for office did an exceptional job with their speeches and public speaking. This is never easy but they acted like pros!

As a result here are our officers for 2016-17:

Public Relations: Audrey Bonk and Ellie McElroy
Executive Service Officer: Mary McElroy
Treasurer: Jack Hall
Secretary: Cici Chagnon
Vice President: Gavin Hughes
President: Kate Sullivan

In addition to this executive board there are class representatives from grades 5-8 as well. Together they are planning service and charitable activities, Pumpkin Bingo and the like.

Fr. Matera has reminded us that this weekend is an important one for the annual weekly census in the Churches. Please make every attempt to attend Mass in your home parish this weekend.

Next week we will be busy with the Book Fair and fall conferences. This is a great time to take stock of how things are going for your children. Yes, you have access to the grades on the portal but much can be learned through a conversation with the classroom teacher. We look forward to having you visit next week.

Don't forget that Choice cards are available on M, W, and F in the morning. Mrs. Budnick will most likely be available if you have questions on conference day. I enjoy being able to go to my regular stores (especially Stop and Shop and Dunkin Donuts) and use these cards and benefit the school.

I hope that everyone has a great weekend. God Bless!

Oh my goodness, I meant to write in my blog much more frequently but it has been a busy month and the weekly blog covered many topics that I would simply have repeated.

Congratulations to Jamie and Diana Kalamarides for their selection as St. John Neumann Volunteer Awards recipients and recognition at the HOPES dinner last evening. Jamie and Diana represent so many of you family members who step up when we need things attended to at St. Mary's School.

Our School Board has established a new sub-committee called Student Recruitment. This group headed by Phil Mikan, working with Toni Chagnon and me, will try to put out a full court press to encourage people to look at our gem of a school and choose to enroll their children. We begin with our first Open House on Monday morning and also on Monday evening at 6:30 pm. Please encourage your friends, neighbors, co-workers to check us out.

I like to tell people two things: I learn something new everyday and I am truly sorry to see Friday afternoon come and the week end. We have had fun in our first month of school but we have also taken advantage of the enthusiasm and high energy of the students and tried to get them started off strong in their learning for the year. Teachers have created wonderful projects with the students including the  plant/animal cell project in grade 5 and Shakespeare for grades 7 and 8. I hear we have some other things coming along so stay tuned!

Your children have grasped the importance of orderly fire drills and the "stay in place" drill. Student safety is of the utmost importance.

I hope you have begun to look ahead to your October calendar and will join us for the School Mass on Sunday October 16 at 11 am. We are very excited to be able to showcase a physical representation of the great things happening in the school. We will have student lectors and collection takers along with a reception after Mass in the Parish Center. Sign up through the school blog!

Finally, the Prudential Insurance Co. sponsors the Prudential Spirit of Community program and award each year. This is open to students in grades 5-12 who have made a difference through a volunteer project. More information is available through The application deadline is Nov. 8.

Have a great weekend!

Welcome to My Blog

Welcome to St. Mary's School 2016-17!

This marks the 60th year of the existence of this fine school. This morning at our opening assembly we talked about the importance of the Mission of the school and how we will all try to live out the Mission through the Student Pledge. Here is what we used:

Mission Statement: To ignite spiritual growth and promote academic excellence within a nurturing faith community. United together, we inspire students to know, love and serve God.

Student Pledge:

As a student of St. Mary's School,
I promise to live my life knowing
god surrounds me and all those I meet.
I will be kind and respectful to others
by treating everyone the way I want to be treated, and
I will help those in need.
I will study hard and continue to learn all my life.

I pointed out several key words and reminded the students of the many ways that they already live out the Mission, while encouraging them to continue to do this.

Another interesting topic I mentioned was the upcoming canonization of Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta. It is such a gift to have a person who lived recently and led a saintly life in recent years that I wanted the students to feel some connection to her. Also, Blessed Mother Teresa did have a devotion to the Blessed Mother so she is one with us as well.

I hope you have a minutes to hear about the beginning of the year this evening and I look forward to seeing you at Back to School Night next Wednesday.
